When a radio broadcast by German propagandist Lord Haw Haw sneeringly
announced the secret deployment of the 357th Fighter Group to England
in 1943 as the “arrival of “The Yoxford Boys” it became
the nick-name for one of the most potent air combat groups of WW II.
Based at Leiston, East Anglia, P-51B Mustang “OLD CROW” was
the personal aircraft of Captain Clarence E ‘Bud’ Anderson,
363rd Fighter Squadron/ 357th Fighter Group. On June 29 1944 ‘Bud’
was leading his Squadron when they engaged enemy fighters on an escort
mission to Leipzig. In the ensuing fight that day Anderson shot down three
FW190’s in a short period of time. Captain Clarence E ‘Bud’
Anderson flew two tours and 116 combat missions with a total of 16.25
kills in the "Old Crow".
