“A harsh but magnificent landscape, mercifully as yet unspoilt by
the destructive hand of Man, this is the land of the polar bear.
One of the world’s largest carnivores, the polar bear can be unpredictable.
I know, because I have been privileged to see them close to, in the wild.
Nevertheless, unless threatened, they just want to be left alone in peace.
Springtime heralds the mating season for polar bears and the females normally
give birth to two cubs in a den dug from the deep snow. The young when
born are tiny, just some eight inches in length and they stay with their
mother for the first three years of their lives. I hope that in my painting,
I have been able to portray a scene which may last for future generations
to admire and respect.”
