David Shepherd Art In The Mists Of Rwanda

Gorillas in the mist

“ In my many years as a wildlife artist and conservationist, one of the most glorious of memories was sitting with my wife Avril, for three days in the closest proximity to a family of fourteen Mountain Gorillas.
Indeed, that visit brought home to me in the most dramatic way, the magic and the tragedy of Africa as the war and genocide started the very day after we left.
How these peace loving and gentle animals have survived is a miracle. They are threatened by destruction of their habitat for firewood and hunters and poachers who kill them for trophies or food. Nevertheless, just a few hundred still remain due entirely to the dedication shown by the Africans who risk their lives daily to protect the gorillas in the mists and sunlight of the Virunga mountains of Rwanda.”
