On October 12th 1940, 603 Squadron reduced to only eight aircraft, took on a large formation of Me109s.The Spitfires, recalls Fighter Ace David Scott-Malden, split up and attacked head-on passing through the entire enemy formation miraculously unscathed.
Scott-Malden engaged a Me109 at the rear of the formation, knocking out his engine, which
Billowed oil and smoke. As the stricken Me109 turned towards home Scott-Malden recalls an urge to wave a gesture of good luck to his opponent, and remembers he was just 20 years old at the time.
Robert Taylor has captured the moment of the head-on attack with Scott-Malden’s Spitfire having passed through the Me109 formation.
