This unique, top secret ‘bouncing’ bomb, developed by Barnes Wallis, was designed to be dropped on the water surface from a precise height from a bomber flying at exactly 230 mph, bounce into the dam wall, sink, then explode at a depth triggered by a hydrostatic fuse. On the night of 16/17 May 1943, Gibson Led his force of specially modified Lancasters, making the first low-level run at the Mhhne Dam. As other crews followed, Gibson, with identification lights ablaze, continually circled to draw the enemy’s fire until the dam was successfully breached, before leading the surviving Lancasters to attack the Eder Dam. Gibson was awarded the Victoria Cross. After a brief lecture tour of the USA, Gibson returned to operational flying in july 1944, but on 19 September he and his navigator both lost their lives when their Mosquito crashed in the Netherlands while leading a raid as master bomber, In the words of Marshal of the RAF Sir Arthur Harris:” Guy Gibson was as great a warrior as this Island ever produced” HIGHLY RESTRICTED AVAILABILITY Limited Edition - Edition Size:250 - £395inc vat (£336.17+vat) Orders from outside the European Union are free of VAT.
