Robert Taylor has depicted a particularly memorable scene with the Spitfires of Johnnie Johnson’s Canadian Wing, complete with Normandy Invasion markings, making a sweep above the Normandy beaches on the 6th June 1944 – D-Day. Johnson and his Canadian pilots flew sweeps on this day from dawn till dusk, limited most of the day to 200feet by the cloud base. Two days later, Johnson landed his Wings at St. Croix – the first allied fighters to touch French soil since the collapse of France.
