The de Havilland Mosquito was arguably the finest multi-role combat aircraft of World War II and, remarkably, one of the few front-line aircraft constructed almost entirely of wood - few other warbirds were built for so many different duties. Amongst its countless roles it formed the core of Coastal Command’s legendary anti-shipping strike force, and it is this role that is the subject of Robert Taylor's thrilling new painting, paying tribute to the Mosquito crews of World War II.

The Studio Proofs

On the night of 16/17 May 1943, nineteen Lancasters and 133 men from the recently formed 617 Squadron carried out one of the most spectacular precision raids in the history of air warfare. This highly secret undertaking went under the code name of Operation Chastise, but the world would come to know it simply as the Dambuster Raid.

Robert Taylor's world famous portrayal of the moment that the Mohne Dam was breached in Operation Chastise sold out almost immediately when it was originally released and has since joined the ranks of the most collectible limited air combat editions ever published.

It is important, therefore, that this famous piece is the latest to be enhanced by the creation of new GICLEE STUDIO PROOF ON CANVAS.

Phantom Fury by Robert Taylor

Phantom Fury by Robert Taylor
Phantom! - the name that struck terror into the hearts of the North Vietnamese

The biggest, fastest, most powerful fighter of its day, the McDonnell Phantom was an awesome war machine that came to dominate aerial combat for over two decades. It may have been the size of many World War II bombers but it could out-perform anything that crossed its path; it was quicker, could turn faster, was better equipped with electronics, carried more ordnance than anything comparable, and it had an unbelievable rate of climb. The F-4 Phantom was the benchmark against which every fighter in the world came to be judged; it was simply the best.

To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Doolittle Raid, we are delighted that this great Masterwork painting is the latest addition to Robert's popular series of Giclée Proofs on canvas.

At 8.20am on April 18, 1942, just four months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, a small force of B-25 Mitchell bombers under the command of Col Jimmy Doolittle, undertook one of the most remarkable air raids of WWII. The Raiders’ orders were anything but simple: fly low level some 800 miles over water into Japanese territory without escort, attack targets in Tokyo and nearby, then, with insufficient fuel to return, fly towards China until they ran out of fuel, bail out and, finally, try to evade capture.

Launching from the heaving decks of the USS Hornet Doolittle led his intrepid force on a daring aerial raid on the enemy's capital, Tokyo. The raiders knew it was a one-way trip, they had insufficient fuel to return, so they must bomb their targets and fly on to China in the hope of survival

Robert Taylor's classic masterwork was created with the technical assistance of Jimmy Doolittle himself, and portrays the moment that Doolittle overflies the carrier to check his compass bearing as another B-25 launches from the heaving deck of the Hornet. Signed by Jimmy Doolittle and thirteen of his men the original print edition is now a rarity, highly sought after on the secondary market. Thanks to the Giclee process however, collectors can now compliment those high value signed prints, and enhance their portfolios, with the release of these new studio prints

Hurricane, Do17, Bf109

Leading his Duxford ‘Big Wing’, Squadron Leader Douglas Bader scores a direct hit on a Do17 as he dives his Hurricane into the mass of German bombers heading towards London, on the afternoon of 15 September 1940. As their hard-pressed Bf109 escorts become low on fuel and are forced to head back to France, the enemy bombers are left to fend for themselves. On this day the Luftwaffe lost almost 60 aircraft, the RAF less than half that number. It was the RAF's greatest day and the tide of the Battle of Britain had turned.

Halifax, Hurricane

Like the fighter pilots of the Battle of Britain, the young men who flew with Bomber Command came not just from Britain, but from all over the Commonwealth and countries of occupied mainland Europe. Every man was a volunteer, prepared to endure the deadly flak and prowling night-fighters, to say nothing of the savage and bitter cold, in order to wage their relentless attack against the Third Reich.

The Legend Of Colin Kelly by Robert Taylor

The Legend Of Colin Kelly by Robert Taylor
B17, Zeros
One burst of enemy fire went right through the middle of the aircraft taking the life of Kelly’s flight engineer and setting the aircraft on fire. With the aircraft mortally damaged and still under attack, Kelly ordered his crew to bail out while he held the aircraft steady. The aircraft exploded throwing the co-pilot Donald Robins clear. The B-17 came down in pieces with the gallant skipper still at the controls. He had no chance of survival. Captain Colin Kelly was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Signed by Master Sergeant James E Halkyard, Staff Sergeant Robert E Altman.

The Long Short Days by Robert Taylor

The Long Short Days by Robert Taylor
Bf109Gs

Robert Taylor’s stunning painting, beautifully captures a group of Bf109Gs from III./JG26, as they return to their forward base after a long fighter sweep along the Channel coast in early 1944. In his unmistakable style, and with inordinate skill, Robert deftly evokes a moment of rare tranquillity amidst the carnage of war as the lengthening sun glints across the frozen landscape during the short days of winter. It was known as the Jagdverbände, the fighter arm of the Luftwaffe, and by June 1940 it boasted some of the world's greatest fighter pilots. With tactics honed to perfection, these battle-seasoned veterans dominated the skies of Europe.

This Sceptred Isle by Robert Taylor

This Sceptred Isle by Robert Taylor
Aircraft - Spitfire - Battle of Britain

This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle...this happy breed of men, this little world, this precious stone set in the silver sea, which serves it in the office of a wall or as a moat defensive to a house, against the envy of less happier lands…this blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.

William Shakespeare 'King Richard II’

For nearly a thousand years the white cliffs of southern England had taunted many a foreign army. These fortress walls of chalk, however, were defended by the moat-like waters of the Channel and together they had shielded the British from her enemies. Alongside Drake they had defied the armies of Spain and her great Armada and, in 1805, had halted the march of Napoleon’s Grande Armée. No enemy force since that of William the Conqueror in 1066 had successfully managed to cross the Channel in anger but, in May 1940, one of the most powerful armies the world had ever seen arrived at Calais. An invasion by Hitler’s all-conquering Wehrmacht was imminent - or so it seemed.

This edition carries the signatures of up to 15 veterans who fought during the Battle of Britain, including John Freeborn ( Veterans Edition, Remarque Editions, Tribute Edition) who is featured in the piece. It is a poignant reminder that a number of these iconic men have sadly passed away since signing, giving enthusiasts the opportunity to add a piece of great historic significance to their collections.

Thunderheads Over Ridgewell by Robert Taylor

Thunderheads Over Ridgewell by Robert Taylor
B17
In the early days of the USAAF daylight bombing campaign, before the arrival of long-range fighter escorts, rarely was a mission flown without Luftwaffe interception, and the ever-present barrage of anti-aircraft fire. The Eighth Air Force crews literally fought their way through swarms of enemy fighters and thick flak to hit their targets, then fought their way home again. Seldom a formation returned without losses and casualties, but inexorably the American bomb groups struck deeper and deeper into enemy territory.
