Jim Clark, 1965, Indy 500 winner
With a front row of A.J.Foyt, Jim Clark and Dan Gurney, the 1965 Indy
500 was bound to be a special event. For the first 116 laps Clark and
Foyt battled consistently for the lead, leaving the rest of the field
behind them, but eventually Jim Clark left all in his wake as he gained
victory two laps ahead of his nearest rival. History was made as Jim Clark
became the first driver to win the Indy 500 and the F1 World Championship
in the same season, was the first 'foreign' driver to win at the Indianapolis
Motor Speedway for 49 years, and the Lotus 38 became the first mid-engined
car ever to win motorsports most prestigious race, and at a record speed
of 150.686mph.
