Giants at Rest by David Shepherd

Giants at Rest by David Shepherd
In my painting I have tried to rekindle a few evocative memories for those of us old enough to remember the last days of British steam in 1968. Our proud steam railway heritage did not go out in a blaze of glory. In the premature rush to progress into the new shiny age of diesel and electric, no-one seemed to care. Almost brand new steam locomotives were going to the scrapyard after just five or six years.

Happy Time by David Shepherd

Happy Time by David Shepherd

Once again I return to my favourite place in Africa to get close to elephants, Savuti in Botswana.
Elephants are never happier than when floundering in mud. Next comes the process of dusting down to get rid of the ticks - talcum powder to jumbos.

In The Masai Mara By David Shepherd

In The Masai Mara By David Shepherd
I first went to this magical park in 1949 and I realised what a fantastic potential it had for eco-tourism. There were scarcely any camps in those days and none of the sophistication which, in many cases, the modern tourist demands. So, due to the number of visitors who go there now, partly as a result of the film ‘Out of Africa’ much of which was filmed in the Mara, one can feel a certain loss of remoteness, but it is still a wonderful place and the elephants do not change.

In The Mists Of Rwanda By David Shepherd

In The Mists Of Rwanda By David Shepherd
In my many years as a wildlife artist and conservationist, one of the most glorious of memories was sitting with my wife Avril, for three days in the closest proximity to a family of fourteen Mountain Gorillas.

Is It A Ladybird? By David Shepherd

Is It A Ladybird? By David Shepherd
Like all young children, the discovery of something new is always exciting. The toy prams and the dolls have been temporarily forgotten and the pet rabbit seems happy, fending for himself; the red beetle with the black spots is far more interesting to two young and exploring people.

Jimmy’s Forge by David Shepherd

Jimmy’s Forge by David Shepherd
In a fast changing world, sadly, the romance of the blacksmith's forge has almost entirely been swept aside in the interests of new technology and commercialism. However, I tracked Jimmy down in Hertfordshire where he still works in an original forge complete with bellows with a real fire.

Masai Giraffe and Young By David Shepherd

Masai Giraffe and Young By David Shepherd
''To me, giraffe have especially endearing personalities. However, they are certainly the most annoying animals in Africa when being sketched or photographed as any visitor to Africa will know; when passing these fascinating animals , their fixed gaze will follow your progress under those lovely eyelashes but the moment one stops, they turn and walk away. I have a huge collection of photographs of giraffes’ backsides'' David Shepherd

Polar Bear Country by David Shepherd

Polar Bear Country by David Shepherd
One of the world’s largest carnivores, the polar bear can be unpredictable. I know, because I have been privileged to see them close to, in the wild. Nevertheless, unless threatened, they just want to be left alone in peace.

Serengeti Friends by David Shepherd

Serengeti Friends by David Shepherd
On a recent trip to the Serengeti National Park, when the fading light was beginning to clothe the landscape in an evening glow, I luckily came across these two magnificent young lions.

Tsavo Rhino by David Shepherd

Tsavo Rhino by David Shepherd
When together Rhinos and anthills make a marvellous picture. Termites very often build their nests in a tree, which then dies, leaving wonderfully gnarled pieces of dead wood not only for the paintbrush to capture but for the sculptor to use his skills to recreate nature’s own masterpiece.

Up a Gum Tree By David Shepherd

Up a Gum Tree By David Shepherd
When so many wildlife species are on the brink of extinction, it is relatively easy to draw attention to the plight of a particular animal if it has a reputation and appearance for being ‘cuddly’. There is surely no better example of this than the irresistible Koala bear

Water Vole by David Shepherd

Water Vole by David Shepherd
So many of us must know this lovely little animal from our childhood: it was of course Ratty in Kenneth Grahame's "The Wind In The Willows".

Now tragically, the water vole is one of this country's most endangered mammals
